INTRODUCTION: In today's routine surgical practice, endoscopic procedures (gastroscopycolonoscopy) are frequently performed. However, the number of surgical endoscopy units that perform ERCP procedures are yet not satisfactory.
METHODS: This study includes the ERCP procedures performed only by general surgeons in 2006 and evaluates the results of these procedures.
RESULTS: ERCP was performed in 305 patients in total (124 female, 181 male). The success rate of cannulation was 94.43%. Invasive procedures were performed in 90.49% of cases. The total rate of complications both early and late have been found as 4.59%. Only one patient died in the late period following repeated laparotomies because of severe necrotizing pancreatitis. ERCP indications and follow-up the patients in 86.88% of the cases were defined by surgical clinics.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The high success rates and low complication rates reported are in accordance with the results of successful ERCP centers in the world literature. Many of the candidates for ERCP procedures are diagnosed and treated at the surgical clinics. And giving a positive advantage, complications after ERCP are also followed and treated at the surgical clinics. Therefore, we believe surgical endoscopists should play a more active role in ERCP procedures.
